Mental Health
Everyday Practice at Bewley Primary School
Our everyday practice at Bewley Primary School is designed to recognise that all of us have Mental Health and all of us need to look after our mental health in order to do our very best. This approach is enshrined in our primary vision statement: “We want our children to learn to respect and value themselves and others. Every child and every adult matters at Bewley and we respect everyone in our school family.”
Our curriculum is designed to give our pupils the opportunity to experience and promote to be well rounded individuals with empathy, tolerance, and a positive attitude who have the courage to stand up to their beliefs. We want our children to have an enquiring mind and a love of learning with high aspirations for lifelong learning by:
- Encouraging pupils to be confident and ambitious through our inspiring curriculum and extra-curricular activities.
- Demonstrating that the voice of every child matters, through our school council, Rights Respecting Ambassadors and our PSHE sessions.
- Striving to be an Attachment Aware and Trauma Informed School. Staff have received trauma and attachment training. Our aim is for our school to be a relationally rich environment for all pupils to thrive.
- Being ambitious for our pupil to become positive, responsible and increasingly independent members of our Bewley family.
- Promoting and encouraging self-esteem, self-discipline and respect.
- We are aware it is a rapidly changing world. Children are taught the importance of keeping themselves safe online. We have a number of E-safety ambassadors who deliver online safety to pupils and parents of Bewley.
- We prepare our children for the modern world through our Relationships and Sex Education curriculum.
- We are an anti-bullying school and we promote anti-bullying week.
Services for Your Child and Your Family
At Bewley we have an experienced and trusted Parent Support Advisor. She offers meetings, home visits and bespoke solutions to problems to ensure that families are empowered to do their very best for their children.
We also:
- employ a qualified therapeutic play therapist who provides 1:1 play therapy sessions for as long as your child needs it. Bespoke group sessions can also be offered.
- provide Drawing and Talking sessions with trained teaching assistants. This is a 12-week course. The teaching assistants will sign post to our PSA if further therapeutic work is needed.
- provide links to Youth Directions, school health resilience nurse and many other services through our Parent Support Advisor and/or the Early Help Service.
- offer less intensive solutions delivered by our excellent staff including Time to Talk, Friendship groups, Thera play activities, Socially Speaking, Lunchtime social group and 1-1 drop ins with the school’s PSA.
We believe that excellent Mental Health is connected to excellent Physical health. So we have an ambitious PE programme. All pupils take part in the Daily Mile at least 3 times a week. In addition, we also offer an extensive range of sports teams and after school clubs. Our children have the opportunity to learn to swim 25 metres. We ensure our playground is well stocked with toys and games. Our Year 6 playground friends encourage plenty of fun and activity on the yard.
CAMHS
If these services do not meet your child’s needs, we able support you through the Trailblazer programme who have direct access to CAMHs. We are happy to work with CAMHS to adapt our provision and meet your child’s needs.
