Useful Information: What to Expect and When
This guide is here to help you understand how your child learns and grows in their early years. The first five years are full of amazing changes, and this guide will give you an idea of what to expect as your little one explores, plays, and learns new skills.
How to Use This Guide
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) shows the learning stages for children from birth to five years. It’s what nurseries, pre-schools, childminders, and Reception classes follow to support your child’s development. This guide is for you as a parent or carer – to see what your child might be learning and how you can help at home.
Children learn best through play, exploring, being active, being creative, and asking questions. We’ve split the first five years into six age bands, because all children grow at their own pace. For each band, you’ll find:
- Things you might notice your child doing
- Simple ideas and tips to support their learning at home
How You Can Use This Guide
- Use it to see what your child can do and celebrate their achievements
- Try some of the ideas at home to support your child’s learning
- Remember, every child is different – your child may reach some milestones earlier or later than others, and that’s perfectly normal!
If you ever feel unsure about your child’s development, you can talk to your child’s key person, a health professional, a childminder, or your local children’s centre.
